Lunarfest 2019 Programming

Lunarfest 2019 is celebrating the Year of the Pig! Join us in the Lunar New Year festivities that will culminate on Saturday, February 16, 2019. That day, we will have visiting Lion Dances from New York City and a multitude of activities, performances and workshops in the afternoon. All Lunarfest programming is free and open to the public.

Special Events

New Haven Free Public Library

The New Haven Free Public Library will be hosting storytimes at all local branches in honor of Chinese New Year. For details, see the full list here.

Asian Network at Yale Screening of Yaya

Attend a special screening of Hong Kong director Justin Cheung’s documentary Yaya. Justin will introduce the film via video. The film explores his own relationship with Teresita Lauang, the Filipino domestic worker who spent decades from her family to raise his family. The screening will take place in the auditorium of Luce Hall at 34 Hillhouse Avenue.

Visualizing Sound: A Lecture and Demonstration on the Notation System and Music of the Chinese Qin

This event will alternate between a lecture, led by ISM Fellow Kelsey Seymour, and a musical demonstration, offered by Peiyou Chang 張培幼. The evening’s discussion and performance will take us through the conceptualization and use of qin tablature with demonstrated examples from an expert performer on the instrument. This event will take place in Sterling Divinity Quadrangle (SDQ ), Marquand Chapel at 409 Prospect Street.

Dumpling Making with the School of Architecture

Join the School of Architecture to make dumplings. Dumpling making is a traditional Lunar New Year event that promotes gathering and sharing. Come learn to make dumplings and eat ones you and others have made. Drop by the Architecture Gallery at 180 York Street to celebrate the New Year by making and eating some dumplings!




Parade Lineup

Join us on Whitney and Audubon for Lunarfest’s biggest parade yet! Grab your programs and red envelopes from the Town Green District tent. Make sure to get a good viewing spot! This year, we will also have performances by the Wudang Kungfu Academy at different points during the parade.


Lion and Dragon Dance Parade

Watch and cheer on the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar lion, dragons (built by Greater New Haven students), and partners and sponsors as they dance and march their way up Whitney then down Audubon.


Parade Remarks

Join us at the end of Audubon Street for a special Lunar New Year message from Mayor Toni Harp, Festival Sponsor Affinity Federal Credit Union and the Yale-China Association.


Lion Dance Finale

Following the parade remarks, make your way to Great Wall Restaurant and Hong Kong Market for the Lion Dance Finale! The Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Lion will dance for the audience atop a 20 foot pole!


Feed the Lion!

Make sure you get a red envelope from the Town Green District tent or a volunteer. Add money to your red envelope and feed it to the lion for good luck in the new year!

Yale-China Association

Come to the Yale-China Association for Lunar New Year storytelling. Hear the unique experiences of others and tell your own story. Browse our exhibit and pick up any and all Lunarfest related materials while you’re here!


New Haven Museum

Get your body moving to celebrate Lunar New Year at the New Haven Museum where tai chi, kungfu and Chinese dance workshops will be held. Arts and crafts stations will also be at the Museum.


Luce Hall

Visit Luce Hall to experience the magic of Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera. Solve lantern riddles with the Yale Police Department. Yale-China Teaching Fellows from Changsha and Hong Kong will teach you Chinese New Year greetings and how to write your own!

Drop by Affinity Federal Credit Union, Lunarfest 2019’s Festival Sponsor Headquarters. Be sure to pick up your official Lunarfest 2019 piggy bank, attend financial literacy classes and take photos at the Lunarfest photobooth!


Neighborhood Music School

Neighborhood Music School welcomes all music lovers to experience the beauty of Chinese music in the performance hall. Additionally, they will host arts and crafts stations and face painting!


Creative Arts Workshop

Stop by Creative Arts Workshop for all things art to celebrate Lunar new Year!


Ely Center for Contemporary Arts

Explore the Ely Center’s latest exhibit: Ear To the Ground, which features artists of diverse backgrounds and disciplines. There will also be a special pop up exhibit by Yale-China Arts Fellow Nicole Pun from Hong Kong.
